The "hot spring" was a thermal spring with legendary healing properties. In earlier centuries visitors came here to cure skin diseases, rheumatism, leprosy, and other diseases but when the San Antonio volcano erupted in 1677, it not only destroyed valuable lands, it also buried the "Holy Spring", as it was then called, among itself. In the meantime, the spring has been relocated to Playa Echentive. Its name has survived in the town of Los Canarios.
