Fuencaliente is located at the southern tip of the island. The volcanoes San Martin (last eruption 1646), San Antonio (last eruption 1677) and the youngest volcano of Spain El Teneguía (eruption 1971) are located in this municipality. La Palma's southern tip offers you to explore volcanology: The slopes and crater rim of the volcanoes San Antonio and Teneguia can be visited in a walk or by camel from San Antonio. At the Teneguía the earth's heat is even today still noticeable under your feet. During the tour over the San Antonio, there are views to the districts Las Indias and Los Quemados as well as to Tenerife, Gomera, and El Hierro.
La Palma's recent volcanoes
A fee-based visitor center provides information (including a film about the 1971 volcanic eruption) about volcanism on La Palma. At the Roque Teneguía, important rock paintings of the ancient Canarians were discovered. On the young volcanic soils of the region, extensive vineyards and banana plantations were planted. Wines such as the famous Malvasia wine have been appreciated since the 16th century. The eruption of San Antonio in the 17th century caused great damage to agriculture and buried the famous Fuencaliente thermal and medicinal spring. Today it has been relocated to Playa Echentive (Playa Nueva).
